♥NARRATIVE♥
+ Definition; A poem that tells a story.
+ Example;

Because I could not stop for Death,

He kindly stopped for me;

The carriage held but just ourselves

And Immortality.

We slowly drove, he knew no haste,

And I had put away

My labor, and my leisure too,

For his civilty.

We passed the school where children played,

Their lessons scarcely done;

We passed the fields of grazing grain,

We passed the setting sun.

We paused before a house that seemed

A swelling of the ground;

The roof was scarcely visible,

The cornice but a mound.

+ Definition; A songlike poem about lost love, betrayal, death. It uses simple language & repetition.
+ Example;

I loved to watch that woman sew.

+ Definition; A long poem that tells a story about a hero. It uses elegant language.
+ Example;

In the time of dreaming
Before the earth was old
Myths were in the making
Legends yet untold

Here began a story
Of one huge enormous frog
Solemn in his glory
He drank from every bog

Tiddalick the great one
Had to quench his mighty thirst
He drank from all the waterholes
So much he nearly burst

He drained the lake and river
The stream and billabong
Soon there was no water left
It was very wrong

Others now grew thirsty
There was no sign of rain
Hot sun scorched the arid earth
No water did remain

Tiddalick moved his mournful head
He had a doleful face
He didn't see the humour
Of smiles there were no trace

The kangaroo and platypus
Wombat and emu
All tried their best to make him laugh
But Tiddalick stayed blue

Some danced and some told stories
Others somersaulted
Tiddalick grew tired and bored
And slept when antics halted

The last to try was Norang the Eel
He was their final hope
He turned himself into a hoop
And wriggled like a rope

The rope stood upright on the sand
Then it began to spin
It went round like a whirlwind
Tiddalick began to grin

Then out slopped some water
Before it reached the sand
Man and beast began to drink
It worked like they had planned

But Norang went on spinning
Till he was scarcely seen
Tiddalick began to chuckle
It really made a scene

As his belly rumbled
The frog rocked to and fro
With his hands upon his sides
A stream began to flow

Tiddalick's mouth was open wide
With water gushing out
A surging tidal river
Spewed like a water spout

It swept away the animals
And covered all the sand
A shining lake of water
Had spread over the land

Now Tiddalick has shrunken
He's just a little frog
Who sometimes hides in desert sands
Or sits upon a log

♥LYRIC♥
+ Definition; A short poem that expresses feelings and thoughts.
+ Example;

In the song of life, all lyrics need a melody.

You are the lyric and you are the melody.

You are the lyrice of my heart and of my soul.

The beauty of rose, speaks a lyric of love.

Love, speaks a lyric of you.

The silent lyric of goodness, echoes from within you.

My heart speaks the lyric of love, to only you.

Let the words, the lyric, that bind, pass between us.

Let the lyric, of you, of me, be as one.

A million words I can speak of you and the lyrics

♥SONNETS♥
+ Definition; A 14-line poem that follows an iambic pentameter, from unstressed syllables to stressed syllables; 10 syllables in a line with 5 of each.
+ Example;

From fairest creatures we desire increase,

That thereby beauty's rose might never die,

But as the riper should by time decrease,

His tender heir might bare his memory:

But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,

Feed'st thy light'st flame with self-substanstial fuel,

+ Definition; A long complex poem that celebrates a person or a thing. It uses elegant language.

+ Definition; A mourning poem about dead person.
+ Example;

Tent Revival

The others my age had grown to women

Heat, I was snow - blinding, deep - fallen pure -

+ Definition; A poem that doesn't follow any rhyme scheme or meter but depends on its own sense of rhtyhm.
+ Example;

I am not a perfect girl.

My hair doesn't always stay in place

And I spill things a lot.

I'm pretty clumsy and sometimes,

I have a broken heart.

My friends and I sometimes fight,

And maybe some days nothing goes right.

But when I think about it

And take a step back,

I remember how amazing

Life truly is.

And that maybe, just maybe,

I like being unperfect.

Definition[:
Lots of words combined until it reaches its outermost part of the page and is followed by another line underneath. For poems, a new line starts when you press enter.

Example[:
Anywhere you are, I am near.
Anywhere you go, I'll be there.
Anytime you whisper my name, you'll see.

How every single promise I keep.
Cos' what kinda guy would I be?
If I was to leave when you need me most.

Significance[:
Well, technically speaking, without lines there wouldn't be a poem. It would just be a bunch of words jumbled together and continuing forever as one line. And that would still be a line, so without a line, there would be no words. Without words there would definately not be a poem.

.:POETRY TERMS:. Onomatopoeia ♥

Definition[:
A word written as how it sounds.

Example[:
Buzz. Moo. Oink. Boom. Meow. Woof. Quack. Woosh. Bang. Boing. Kerplunk. Squish. Ring. Bam. Crunch. Crackle. Pop. Ding. Rawr.

Significance[:
I think the importance of onomatopoeia (gee, that's a hard word to spell) is that some sounds are just more fun to write out how it actually sounds. And I think poems are supposed to be fun, most of the poetry terms' importance are revolved around fun.

.:POETRY TERMS:. Assonance ♥

Definition[:
Also called vowel rhyme; a rhyme in which the same vowel sounds are used with different consonants.

Example[:
Flash with a rash gimme my cash flickin' ash
Runnin with my money, son, go out with a blast.

Significance[:
I think it's important to use assonance because, like alliteration, it's fun and interesting. Reading it is easy, however writing it can be a trick. Assonance is just one of those things that doesn't seem so important, but without it, something's just missing. If you have the consonants sounds (alliteration), why not vowels?

Definition[:
The repetition of the first sounds in words.

Example[:
Alliteration? An author affliction and awful addiction, avoiding any actual achievement.

Significance[:
I think alliterations are important because they're fun to read. It's enjoyable to make one because  it requires creativity and words that go together that actually make sense. Alliterations, when read fast, can be a trick, which makes it more fun to read.

Definition[:
An arrangement of words in regularly measured, patterned, or rhythmic lines or verses.

Example[:
No I'm not bitter, I'm not mad.
Well maybe just a little, just a tad.
I know every apple here ain't bad,
But I found a worm in every single one I had.

We would all be happy, all be glad,
If sweet Mama Nature never had,
All these dirty little boys,
Who think girls are made for toys.

Significance[:
I think meter is important because it makes the poem sound in place and not so jumpy. It also makes the poem sound neat and in order, and it's predictable what the next stanza is gonna sound like, or what the next rhyme is.

Definition[:
A sad and mournful poem written to lament for the dead.

Example[:
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on the snow.

I am the sunlight ripened on the grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning's rush,
I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds of circling flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

Significance[:
I think the importance of elegies are that they honor the dead. For dead people want to be remembered, or at least not forgotten. Elegies show significance to the non-living.

Santa Is A Line Dancer [:
I went to a club on Christmas Eve,
There was a party like you wouldn't believe;
The beer was flowin', the place was loud,
A man could get lost just workin' the crowd;

I was on my second round and what did I see?
An old man with a beard was smiling at me;
He wore a red coat and he drove a sleigh;
Man, could that stranger slip and sway!

Santa is a line dancer, burnin' up the floor,
He's ringin' those bells, and he's ready to roar;
Santa is a line dancer, and he's got the beat,
Better make way for those magic feet.

I thought I was crazy, couldn't believe my eyes,
It's the Miller talkin', then I realized
Santa himself was out on the town,

Are You Talking To Me? [:
"Are you talking to me?" she said passing by

Definition[:
A poem which includes only a pair of lines; usually with rhyme and are of the same length.

Example[:
I'm still alive but I'm barely breathing.
Just praying to a God that I don't believe in.

Significance[:
I think couplets are important because it's short and to the point. And I think that's what couplets do, two sentences going together to tell a long story.

Definition[:
Something that resembles or represents something else visually.

Example[:

It breaks your heart;

When people you know became people you knew.

When you can walk right past someone as if they were never a huge part of your life.

You used to be able to talk for hours on the phone,

& now you can't even look at each other in the eye.

It completely breaks your heart to know good things change,

& there's nothing that you can do..

Significance[:

Just like metaphors and similies, symbols help represent something to show how much those two things are alike. Symbols help readers interpret things, and that's different for everyone because they have different perceptions.

Definition[:
When the ending of words sound alike, like 'wall', 'fall', 'ball', 'mall'... They all have the 'all' ending.



Example[:

Can somebody explain to me,

Why everybody is trying to be,

Living like a celebrity,

Doing what they see on MTV.

Ice is cool but I'm looking for more,

Simple things are what my heart beats for.

Cos' that's me, I don't ask for much,

Baby, having you is enough.

Significance[:

I think what's important about rhyming is that it makes the poem sound more fun, and good. Because you can talk about this one thing, one topic, when you have so many words that sound alike in the poem. It's also fun to rhyme because you can experience with half-rhymes, and rhymes that don't have to visually look alike but sound alike.

.:POETRY TERMS:. Personification ♥

Personification[:
Giving non-humans and objects human-like actions; describing a thing as if it were a person.

Example[:
The lightning danced across the sea.

Significance[:
Giving an object a human-like action will create an image in the reader's head, to show what the object is doing, or at least look like it's doing something. It will help with the reader's understanding, because readers are better with understanding human actions.

Definition[:
A beat when a poem is read, the flow of movement of the words in the poem.

Example[:

The rhythm in that poem was steady because every line had the same amount of syllables, with the ending words rhyming very well.

Significance[:

It's important to stay on beat in a poem, because when the poem is read out loud, it will sound better and professional, more fun and exciting to read. I personally don't like poems that don't rhyme, also poems with no rhythm at all just bore me. Rhythms in a poem tend to sound more like, a song. A song that is spoken, that instruments can play in the background to the same beat.

.:POETRY TERMS:. Extended Metaphor ♥

Definition[:
When a metaphor is extended in a poem, when many things are compared at once.

Example[:
My family is an expired firecracker
Set off by the blowtorch of divorce,
We lay scattered in many directions.
My father is the wick,
Badly burnt but still glowing softly.
My mother is the blackened paper fluttering down,
Blowing this way and that,
Unsure where to land.
My sister is the fallen, colorful parachute,
Lying in a tangled knot, unable to see the beauty she holds.
My brother is the fresh, untouched powder
That was protected from the flame.
And I, I am the singed, outside papers,
Curled away from everything,
Silently cursing the blowtorch.

Significance[:
Extended metaphors are important because they show how just one subject can relate to so many different other things. It shows strong emphasis on what the author is trying to compare it to.

.:POETRY TERMS:. Speaker ♥

Definition[:
A person who reads a poem out loud, also known as the poet.

Example[:
The poem was very vivid because the speaker read with emotion.

Significance[:
Without a speaker, there would be no emotion to the poem, because  you can't have emotions when you're reading the poem to yourself. Even if you did, it wouldn't be as lively. A speaker can be anyone, as long as they read it to an audience.

.:POETRY TERMS:. Tone ♥

Definition[:
Any sound with a particular quality, pitch, strength, source, etc... A stress on a syllable of a word.

Example[:

*Produce*

1. Pruh-DOOS (verb) ; to make, to bring existence to.

2. PROH-doos (noun) ; something that is made or produced.

~ The same word has different pronunciation, it has different emphasize on different syllables. So the tone is different.

Significance[:

In poems, or any writing at all, tones are important because if you read it a different way than it's actually supposed to be, then it might mean a different meaning, causing the text you're reading harder for you to comprehend. Especially in poems, if you read a word in the wrong tone, the flow of the poem when read (RED, not REED) aloud will not sound right.

Definition[:
The way you take in something, understanding it your way. Your concept of something when it is mentioned to you. Almost like your schema.

Example[:

Every person interpret things differently because everyone has a different schema.

Significance[:

It's important how you see things, how you interpret them. In poems, there are things that the author purposely writes to get you thinking different ways, or they write it on accident, thinking this way while you're comprehending it another way. Everyone interpret things differently because everyone sees things differently; different set of eyes and mind.

Definition[:
Making a comparison between two things using 'like', 'as', or 'than'. It's something compared to something else.



Example[:

Stones; heavy like the love you've shown,

Solid as the ground we've known,

And I just wanna carry on,

We took it from the bottom up,

And even in a desert storm,

Sturdy as a rock we hold,

Wishing every moment froze,

Now I just wanna let you know..

Significance[:

Like a metaphor, I think similes are important in the same way. Except it's less like the something we're comparing it to, because we use comparing words, and we don't emphasize on how much something is like something else, like metaphors do.

Definition[:
Making a comparison between two things without using 'like', 'as', or 'than'. It's something used to represent something else to compare the two unlike things.

Example[:
Just a fraction of your love fills the air,
And I fall in love with you all over again,
You're the light that feeds the sun in my world,
I'd face a thousand years of pain for my girl.

Significance[:
Metaphors are important because it shows not only is something like another thing, it shows it without the comparison words, which makes it more like the other thing; showing how strongly that something is so similar to the other thing, almost like it was the other thing. Strong connections will make the reader understand easier.

.:POETRY TERMS:. Stanza ♥

Definition[:
It's an arrangement of lines, usually it's four, sometimes having a certain length with a rhyme scheme, creating something called a paragraph of a poem.

Example[:
*Stanza.1*
The story starts when it was hot and it was summer and,
I had it all; I had him right there where I wanted him,
She came along, got him along, now let's here the applause,
She took him faster than you can say sabotage.
*Stanza.2*
I never saw it coming, wouldn't have suspected it,
I underestimated just who I was dealing with,
She had to know the pain was beating on me like a drum,
She underestimated just who she was stealing from.

Significance[:
It separates the poem into bits so that it's easier to read. Like essays and other writings, a different paragraph means another idea. Stanza is another word for a paragraph in poems. It symbolizes another idea in the poem.

Definition[:
The formation of mental description or illustration collectively. Images go through your brain while you hear descriptive words from a writing.

Example[:
I'm five years old,
It's getting cold out,
Got my big coat on.
I hear your laugh,
and look up smiling at you,
I run and run
Pass the pumpkin patch
and the tractor's ride
and now, the sky is gold.
I hug your legs
and fall asleep
on the way home.

Significance[:
The importance of images in your mind will help you understand and connect with the poem more. How you see the images is based on your concept, it also has to depend on the descriptive words of the poem. Desccriptive poems tend to paint a picture in your mind so you can comprehend the piece of writing while reading it.

Definition[:

A type of literary art in which can be written or spoken to express, to say what you want to say. It can rhyme.

A plum is a plum
A kiss isn't a kiss

Significance[:

I think poetry is important because when I think of poetry, I think of rhymes. And I think rhymes are very cool to learn about. It helps with writing songs, and music is important in life.
